When I was 5, my favourite book was about a small bear who went on a long journey.
Then I lost the book.
For years I tried to find another copy, without knowing its name. Eventually I found it: Odd and The Great Bear, by James Roose-Evans.
Last year I googled the author. He was still alive, aged 94.
(He was also blogging regularly).
In August I wrote, telling James how much joy his book had brought me.
In September he sent me a lovely thank-you card.
In October he died, shortly before his 95th birthday.
I’m glad I wrote when I did.
(James is still blogging, and will be until 2030; he wrote hundreds of posts in advance).
When somebody has touched my life, I like to write and let them know. It gives me a warm glow. Hopefully it does the same for them.
Do it yourself. Don’t leave it too late. Use your nicest pen, if you can.
I would like to thank David Charles because of this post which inspired me to write to my heroes. Also because he’s the only person who’s written to tell that he appreciates my writing.
The only person so far.
