Conjuring Soup
Right now, in my mind, I’m making soup
In my mind, I’m preparing vegetables
Adding stock
In my mind, I’m bringing this soup to the boil
And in your mind, it’s simmering too
In our minds, we’re adding seasoning
Tasting for flavour
We’re thinking about garnish, adding fresh herbs
Before serving the soup to people who are special to us
In my mind, I’m thinking about an elephant
An elephant eating soup
And now, so are you
In my mind, I’m thinking about poetry and magic
About a poem, about an elephant, eating imaginary soup
Which has been prepared for people whom we love
And the soup exists in our minds, as does the elephant
And for a moment that makes our heads feel heavy
But this poem is made of ideas lighter than air
Which exist in the space between us
And the people we love are real
Yet we hold them in our hearts
And that, my friend, is how magic works
Conjuring Soup is taken from the 2021 collection, ‘A Tempting Magic’ by Sheffield based performer Tim Holmes aka The Buddhist Punk. Part rallying call, part confessional, the collection explores how using language works is a magical act, that when we learn to spell we're gifted potential to change the world.
“A book for lovers of verse and wordplay with a message, beautifully enhanced with artwork from Sheffield artist Max Charles.”
